Friends of Lake Darling would like to extend a huge thank you to the Washington Iowa Soil and Water Conservation District for providing us with a grant to purchase and assemble Nature Study backpacks for adults and youth. The Nature Study backpacks are available to be checked out at Lake Darling's Boathouse, campground hosts, or the Park's staff. This generous grant allowed us to purchase 6 youth backpacks and 4 adult backpacks which include nets, binoculars, specimen dishes, magnifying glasses, and field guides - everything you'd need to explore Lake Darling!

Friends of Lake Darling hopes these Nature Study backpacks will help encourage exploration and awareness of the wildlife, ecosystems, conservation, and watershed management at Lake Darling. The backpacks will be available to check out from campground hosts, Lake Darling Boathouse and Parks staff.

There are both adult and children nature study backpacks available for checkout free of charge thanks to the Washington Iowa Soil and Water Conservation District! We hope children and their families will take advantage of these backpacks to explore, learn, and enjoy the benefits of conservation and being outdoors at Lake Darling.

Lake Darling Pedestrian Bridge  Made Possible By Donation From Jerry B. Robinson.

October 28, 2018: Recent completion of the 140 foot pedestrian bridge spanning the Lake Darling State Park silt dam will be marked by a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony on Sunday, October 28, 2018 at 2 PM. The event will be held at the Cottonwood Shelter adjoining the first boat ramp parking lot and at the new American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant bridge.

Events will begin with the dedication at the Cottonwood Shelter, followed by a ribbon cutting at the bridge and return to the shelter for refreshments and conversation. The public is encouraged to attend and to dress for the weather.

"This is yet another example of the Friends of Lake Darling working in partnership with Lake Darling State Park to bring ADA amenities to our park, making nature more accessible to the public,"  Dr. Fay Vittetoe  Friends of Lake Darling Board Member, reported. "At the 2016 Park Re-dedication we dreamed of a bridge over the silt dam, and here it is!"

Funding for the bridge and its installation was made possible by Richland native Jerry B. Robinson, currently of Engelwood Colorado, through a grant of $200,000. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources supervisor Tom Basten said the ADA approaches to the bridge were funded with funds from Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) Funds allocated to the park this year.

Vittetoe commented that the Friends will continue to work with park personnel on future projects and invites the public to take time to enjoy the paved trails connecting shoreline to the campground. There is a new segment of trail connecting to the Four Season Cabins near which the cabins donor names panel is now view-able.
